As a 25 year old Ghanaian, it still amazes me what happens around me everyday in this country. Yes, I was born and bred here; ii have not even seen the airport before, let alone gone out off this country so you can call me a veteran.

In Ghana, the basic transportation is «trotro» (minivan). Face it, it is cheaper than taxi and we don’t have trains like in India. The average Ghanaian can not afford hiring taxis because even our economy is not stable. Do not get me wrong, I love my country, but it is frustrating when one US dollar costs two Ghana cedis, the minimum job anyone can do here is selling and politicians want to be treated like gods when they do not do anything for the country when they are in power.

On the plus side, Ghanaians are very hospitable people, something foreigners tend to take advantage of, especially the Chinese. We love peace and unity, and we love football (soccer). Our love for this sport is legendary. With known names like Micheal Essien, Kevin prince Boateng, Abedi Ayew Pele and His son Dede Ayew, etc. I think some foreign countries did not know this country until the world cup.

In Ghana, we love our culture, a prime example will be the asantes in the Ashanti region. Otumfour osei Tutu II is the ASANTEHENE (chief of asantes) in my opinion is more revered than the prince of wales (no offense to the British). One has to see him, especially when it is time for their festival. He is adorned in gold from head to toe with our native cloth, «kente». The gold on him tends to weigh so much that his hands has to be held by his servants.

One thing though is that, Ghanaians tend to be copycats. With the help of tv and the world wide web, Ghanaian youth are becoming more westernized by the day. Our music genre highlife evolved to hiplife, with the help of the ‘godfather» Reggie Rockstone. Now the Ghanaian music industry is full of hip-hop, dance-hall and even niger music (beats from Nigeria). I do love these genres of music, in my opinion it is not good and proper to raise high the flag of other countries when it has become so easy for us nowadays to raise our flag.

This article is just an introductory one. ‘The Ghanaian way’ is going to be series of articles about Ghanaians and our society. the positive and the negative and the silliness.Opinions are like noses, everyone has one. this is mine. Till next time.

My roommate in college was a varsity scholar playing in the university’s basketball team. His dream of making it to the nationals being a very good player himself was shattered when he experienced sports injuries. I on the other hand was able to capture it on video. But his will was too strong to be put down by the incident. Instead it sparked him an idea.

After months of rehabilitation and recovery he told me that we should put up a website to contain videos of different sports injuries. I was knowledgeable in web design and programming so I agreed. I also saw it as an opportunity to hone my skills in video documentary. It took us less than a month and the website was up only missing the videos.

Searching for sports events and sports injuries became our shared passion. We were invited one time to cover a major football event in Nashville. We came to the location and we were overwhelmed by the crowd. What’s even more overwhelming was the size of one of the players playing as the team’s defense. My video camera was rolling when the player tackled three players at one time. One the players he tackled lost his helmet and he was crushed by another player’s helmet.

The player’s face was covered in blood and he got a broken nose and his jaw was obviously dislocated. The medical team scrammed to the field to get him. The crowd was silenced by possibly one of the worst sports injuries they have ever witnessed. I uploaded the video to our website and true enough, many were shocked by the event. It became a big news online.

After receiving raves and comments, we went to another sports event in San Francisco to capture sports injuries. There was a basketball championship. Fans from the opposing team came in the stadium filled with zeal and excitement. The star player from one of the team who was known for his slam dunks attempted to wow the crowd with his signature move. The opposition couldn’t let it happen so their master blocker tried to prevent the dunk. But instead of blocking the ball, he hit the dunker’s face with massive force.

The loud crowd was also in still when the player fell on the floor with a thud. The players cleared the scene for the medics to treat the player. He was unconscious the whole time.

Verdict

Chelsea have strengthened the squad that already no other team can match with two world class additions. There is no value in it, but they will win the league again at short 4/9 odds.
