Cable television provides television viewing to consumers by way of radio frequency signals. It is picked up by antennas and then delivered through transmission lines. This is different from traditional broadcast or satellite television.

Cable is popular in North America, Europe, Australia, East Asia, South America and the Middle East. In the United States of America, at least 58 percent of households enjoy this form of TV viewing.

Unlike broadcast, cable TV, or CATV, has opened up the world to television viewers. This is because its subscribers are treated to hundreds of channels. This is an opportunity that broadcast stations are unable to provide.

Because of the large variety of shows on cable, there’s something for everyone. For example, sports enthusiasts will love the large variety of games and sports programming they get access to.

Instead of being treated only to a football game, for example, you can experience shows on football history, listen to football commentary; enjoy exclusive interviews on football personalities and other programming that may not be found in broadcast.

Do you have children? Are you concerned about the quality of broadcast television for children? Many parents worry that broadcast television offers shows that are too violent or that do not offer much in the way of education.

However, with CATV, your child can experience a large variety of educational programs on nature, world history, humanities, science and more. What if you’re a news buff? Broadcast can only show you a limited amount of local and national news. However, cable can give you news from around the world.

If, for example, you’re an American subscriber, you’ll be treated to the way they present the news in London, or Canada, or some other location. If will give you a broader insight into what is happening in the world and to other world views. You’ll also be treated to varying accents and languages.

Love fashion? Every fashion lover will love cable television programming on fashion. They will find a variety of shows on clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories. You’ll learn what the fashion designers are saying. You’ll learn what the up to the minute style is. You’ll be treated to fashion shows and what goes on at fashion houses.

Broadcast television can only show you so much of the fashion world. Cable can show you everything. Plus, it has fewer restrictions as to what can be shown. For example, fashion shoots may involve nudity. CATV providers are less likely to censor a high-end fashion shoot because of the appearance of nudity.

No matter what your focus may be, cable television offers the viewer a wide variety of programming from everything on technology, cooking, health, style and much and much more. Once you make the switch, you’ll never go back to broadcast.

The University of Texas at El Paso NCAA Football Picks team had a disappointing season in 2009, the Miners finished 4-8 and 3-5 in conference. The Mike Price coaching decision looked good at this time 4 years ago. Price had taken over the football program, at a predominately basketball institution and led them to back to back bowl bids. But UTEP is coming off of their 4th consecutive losing season, this sports handicapper believes now that the football program has tasted success, Price will need to turn things around quick if he want to keep his job, as a matter of fact, we know that’s the case. Price has some explosive offensive talent to work with this season, but that side of the football hasn’t been the problem. Quarterback Trevor Vittatoe threw for 3,308 yards and it was a pretty bad season, running back Donald Buckram had 1,594 yards rushing to lead the offensive unit, they both return. The defense will have a new 4-3 conventional look, the unit is getting rid of the 3-3-5 that they used to run. The other good news for UTEP is that the schedule looks pretty easy, Houston is the only FBS team on the schedule in the first eight games that had a winning record last season.

In 2009 the explosive UTEP offense averaged 425.4 yards per contest, that ranked 22nd in the FBS. The passing game ranked 21st, averaging a little over 274 yards per contest. The running attack led by Buckram ranked, 57th, with over 151 yards per game, and the Miners put an average of 29.8 points per contest on the scoreboard.

The Miners 2009 defense was poor to say the least. The unit gave up an average of 446 yards per game, and that ranked 100th in college football. The pass defense ranked 98th in the FBS, giving up and average of 246 yards per contest through the air. The run defense was even worse, giving up a little over 200 yards per game on the ground, and that ranked 106th in the nation. UTEP allowed an average of 33.5 points per contest, and that ranked 104th nationally.

Quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, should become the Miners all team leading passer in this, his last season. He has already thrown for over 9,600 yards and 75 touchdowns, Vittatoe did throw 15 picks least season. Running back Buckram is also a senior, and was 4th in the nation last season in rushing, He had eight 100 yard games and toped the 200 yard mark in three of those. He also rushed for at least 2 touchdowns in six games a year ago. But he gained just 777 combined yards against Big 6 opponents Kansas and Texas. The offensive line returns 3 starters to block for Buckram and protect Vittatoe. The wide receiver are OK, senior Kris Adams heads the group.

Only four starters return to a defensive unit that was torched repeatedly. Redshirt freshman tackle Germard Reed won a starting spot during spring drills, and how he hold up is still the question? Linebacker Jeremy Springer is a returning starter, but even he is struggling, he lost his starting job in spring practice. Senior safety Braxton Amy has been productive in the past, and the unit will need his leadership especially with three new starters. Don’t be surprised to see some true freshman get a lot of playing time on the defense.

As a spectator at a college football game in early September, my eyes scanned the stadium as I entered to find it filled with fans, coaches, cheerleaders, team players, the marching band, the media, and last but not least – the school’s mascot. I often wonder about who is inside that cute little (sometimes enormous) costume and what it must be like to view their world from within. Is it a male or female entertaining the fans and posing for photo opportunities? If I met this person outside of the costume, would they have the same exuberant personality I witnessed at the game? How uncomfortable are they when suited up in the costume? Are they burning up? Is it hard to breathe? What thoughts run through their minds as people anxiously gather round and stand by to pose for a photo? Ahh, the things a college mascot must (and do) endure for the price of notoriety and fame even when there’s so little of either that goes with the job. Other than classmates and faculty, no one really knows who makes up the college mascot and brings it to life.

I remember my first college football game when I attended specifically to watch my son be part of the opening event that welcomed the team on the field. I soaked up everything about that game and felt like a teenager again thinking back to my high school days. This was the first time I caught sight of the school’s mascot who, at every glance I got, was quite entertaining and amusing. This mascot certainly did their job well because I felt even more proud to be associated with the university.

As in any profession, there are requirements that clearly define the make up of the perfect candidate. Mascots must be physically fit and energetic. There is no standing still (unless posing for a photo) when you must be visible among the fans and actively involved at all times. Mascots who are athletically inclined, quite limber and extremely flexible, like that of a cheerleader, have the upper hand. Gymnastics, dance, and recreational sports have their advantages indeed. Candidates must be able to withstand the heat. Temperatures can easily reach 120 degrees inside those costumes and often do especially if parading around a football field in sunny Florida in the middle of September. Keeping yourself hydrated is an absolute necessity. And last but not least a mascot must be entertaining which requires personality, humor, creativity and spontaneity. Personality is a gift and not something that can be learned. You either have it or you don’t. This also holds true with having a humorous side and a knack for being creative.

Practice makes perfect. We have all heard that cliche before. There’s nothing more to add to that. It’s just plain common sense. What better way to critique your performance than to watch a video of yourself. Mascots must know the rules of the game. There is nothing more embarrassing than a mascot pumping up the crowd for something that benefits the visiting team. Frightened children, obnoxious fans, devastating losses, these things are a given and a good mascot should always know exactly how to negotiate, act upon, and execute necessary improvisations to deal with any surrounding circumstances – winning or losing, in the splendor of victory or the agony of defeat.

The job is a voluntary position but depending on the college or university, one might receive a scholarship. Being able to travel with the team, work with the cheerleaders and band members instills teamwork and brings about lifelong friendships. Some might say a mascot has the opportunity to act like a fool since the general public has no idea who fills the costume; but don’t be fooled, there’s a method to the madness. There are numerous rewards for a college mascot but the greatest of all would be self-actualization. Underneath all that make-up you are bound to find a unique individual representing their alma mater with a great sense of pride, incredible endurance, and perhaps even an astounding outlook on life!
