Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle United is 'sportswashing', not football

‘AngloArabia’ author Dr David Wearing says a Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle United is clearly about ‘sportswashing’ – an attempt to clean up their reputation – and not about football.

Reports suggest a £300m deal between the Saudi Public Investment Fund and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is nearing completion.

  1. I could use the same stupid argument against the west. America hosting the World Cup is sportwashing against its recording in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, Palestine—and not to mention racism inside. The same thing could be applied on the UK. ?

  2. The investment company will know there will be panic for tickets so the first thing they will do is put the prices up meaning your casual Toon fan will not be able to watch their team play!

  3. The also have investments in shell but people don't mind giving them there money to use their cars, the have shares in apple but people don't mind using iPhones, twitter and many more businesses that people use without a second thought. Also the US are just as guilty of killing innocent people in Yemen, they reported that in drone strikes over the period of a year 90% of the people killed we not their intended targets. Nor do we mention our own UK government who work closely with the Saudis and actually supply them with most of their weapons. Like I says non of these issues make the news but buying a football club is just not acceptable.

  4. This is an investment. Nothing more. Just stop turning anything Saudi Arabia does into something bad. We have goals and ambitions that we will achieve under the leadership of our MBS. We invested in the F1, Golf, cars industry “Lucid” and Uber.. Ets. why now? Is it because this one took a big media momentum because of the great Newcastle fans?

  5. Hypocracy from all news channels. Never do they mention that utd main sponsor for 10 years Saudi Telecom. liverpools main sponsors Standard Chartered and Western Union both fined £Billions for money laundering with terrorists but never reported. WHY ?

  6. If Manchester United did this, I'd renounce them and everything they stand for without hesitating. Seeing sports fans cheer this on and pass it off as a normal thing is disgusting and truly spells out why the game will die if this continues.
