Premiership Preview

Following the bitter disappointment of England’s failure to qualify from their group in Euro 2008, «the best league in the world» resumed on Saturday with some interesting results. The 1 thing that was very apparent was that all the members of the ill-fated squad were roundly booed away from home in all the matches.

Bolton Wanderers that have been enduring a rotten season pulled off the shock of the season so far when they defeated Manchester United 1-0 at the Reebok stadium. Nicolas Anelka, who has been the subject of verbal sparring between Bolton and France manager, Raymond Domenech, proved to be the hero when he pounced on an error by Manchester United defender Gerard Pique to score what proved to be the winner in the first half.

Manchester United expectedly pressed forward after that but without Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were not able to find the equalizer with Carlos Tevez missing an absolute sitter in the second half as he managed to screw the ball wide from 2 yards out. Liverpool had earlier in the day accounted for an abysmal Newcastle United 3-0 with goals from Steve Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel. It could have been a lot more but for the profligacy of Fernando Torres, who could have had 4 goals himself.

Arsenal laboured to a 2-0-goal victory to a Wigan side that had just appointed Steve Bruce as their manager. It was goalless for a long period of time until Arsenal scored 2 goals in a 1-minute spell through captain William Gallas and Tomas Rosicky.

Chelsea defeated Derby at the Pride park stadium 2-0 with goals from Salomon Kalou and Shawn Wright-Phillips. Michael Essien managed to get himself sent off after coming on as a late substitute, a decision that angered the Chelsea management as they feel they are being victimised with flimsy red cards been dished out to their players for innocuous looking challenges.

This result however, has caused Billy Davies, the Derby manager, his job as he was sacked today.

Everton defeated Sunderland 7-1 to enjoy their biggest margin of victory in years. This kind of result is too prevalent in the premier league and makes a mockery to the claim that it is the best in the world as Everton are not a very good attacking side, so for them to score 7 against a premiership side says more about the league that it does Everton. In the past Arsenal have defeated Middlesboro 7-0, Portsmouth have beaten Reading 7-3, Manchester United have beaten Nottingham Forest 8-1 and Ipswich 9-0 in the past.

Aston Villa defeated a hapless Middlesboro 3-0 whilst Portsmouth defeated manager-less Birmingham city 2-0.

On Sunday Tottenham Hotspurs and West Ham United played out a 1-1 draw in a match that was marred by terrible officiating by referee Mike Riley as he managed to infuriate both sets of supporters, management and players. Fulham yet again managed to let a lead slip by them twice against Blackburn as they fought out a 2-2 draw.
