Is Darwin Nuñez Actually Bad? | Explained

Today we’re taking a look at the numbers behind Darwin Nuñez’s much-debated start to life at Liverpool.

Liverpool’s first major signing after Julian Ward took the reins from Michael Edwards as the club’s sporting director, Darwin Nuñez’s £67.5million arrival at Anfield was greeted with an unusual amount of intrigue. After seeing club legend Sadio Mané leave for Bayern Munich and having lost out on €100million Aurelien Tchouameni to Real Madrid, the fact the Reds decided to use up the bulk of their summer budget and sign Nuñez for an inflated fee in the same window that Man City signed Erling Haaland for considerably less, immediately put pressure on the Uruguayan forward.

And while the Merseyside club arguably have a better hit rate than any other club in the transfer market, there are already doubts over Nuñez’s ability to hold down the number nine spot. Jürgen Klopp has called for patience, but the English press never are with big money signings, even ones who scored 26 goals in just 24 league starts the season before. The narrative currently dominating the debate over his start to life in England is that while he offers a lot to Klopp’s side physically, he doesn’t have the technical ability to succeed in the Premier League.

But is that a load of reactionary nonsense? Or does his signing represent a rare mistake for the Liverpool recruitment team? On today’s FD Explained, we’re going to take a look.

  1. Let the guy adapt to the league. Every player is different. Some adapt easily like Haaland some take their time, regardless of their price tag. Many people are commenting like they could have done better themselves. Let the kid adapt to his club and environment.

  2. So harsh as well this video as his stats this season have been heavily impacted by the rest of the teams form, he’s lost the ball so much and not had many successful passes because of the teams overall play and he’s isolated alone up front when we’re playing poorly. Take tonight’s west ham game for a real example and it shown how good he really is when liverpool play how they usually do. Great first half

  3. he needs to be put on the left wing, he had multiple runs in the city game where he out paced a lot of the city defenders and got through on goal but he couldn't finish or didn't pass to an open man. I see a lot of quality there and I hope that skill of his gets exploited and developed to be a something that is used to our advantage.

  4. Everyone says he needs time to settle in. But since when does not being settled in mean you take stupid shots all the time when you’ve got 2 teammates wide open for a cross. He’s a bum.

  5. I thought he was bad too. Now I believe he will be great if given time . He needs to run a lot more in training and do some Strenght training so he can be more commanding. Klop will develop him

  6. A bad transfer for LFC because the club needed money to reinforce the mid. But all the money was spent on nunez, believing he will score goals to mask the mid weaknesses. The plan failed spectacularly

  7. im Portuguese, I watched him played in my team(benfica) i have to say that sometimes he looked a bit awkward touching the ball, however he has something diferent I can't explain, something special, i watched him play all games in benfica and i can tell you that he was better than joao felix at benfica, (and felix was a beast in benfica) i believe he can become one of the best players in the world if he focus on his training and learn with the best, for now he just have to adapt to this new playstyle of the premier league, you will thank me later

  8. By looking at his performance vs City last Sunday, I don't have high hopes. His lack of football IQ worries me the most. He doesn't know when to pass. The only thing he did with the ball is go straight at defenders and try to run past them. Either he doesn't have the vision to see the whole field or he is too obsessed to prove something. His finish is also lacking when he did get the chance to shoot.

  9. It’s one season he spent one season at Liverpool if it’s 5 or 6 seasons and he doesn’t improve then maybe he’ll be a flop but u can’t judge now because it’s new for him, he doesn’t understand the language and how different the league is

  10. His positioning is great, his passing is improving, and his finishing is getting a lot better. 4 goals and 1 assist is good stats for a bench player. His work rate is also good. If you watched the arsenal match, you would remember he sprinted back the length of the field and won the ball back. He just needs time.
