Manchester City Defeat United And Top The Premier League

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 victory over rivals Manchester United and with only two games remaining this season, the title is now theirs to lose.

City captain Vincent Kompany was on hand to head the vital goal for the blues at the end of the first half, which means that City are now level with United on 83 points and have a superior goal difference. which should be enough to seal the title if City win their two remaining games. United had an eight point advantage just three weeks ago, but last nights defeat, in addition to a surprising defeat at Wigan and a 4-4 draw at home to Everton, has seen the advantage nullified and City on the brink of their first league title since 1968.

City who went into the game three points adrift of the reigning champions needed to win the game while a draw for United would probably have been enough to secure a 20th league title for the Old Trafford side.

In a game of few chances, City looked the more positive team form the outset, while United had set up a defensive team and chosen to play Wayne Rooney as a lone striker and he looked isolated as a result, in a game where the Reds hardly threatened to score. The game had been billed as the biggest in the history of the Premier League, but largely failed to live up to the expectations of a classic encounter.

In a dramatic turn of events Manchester United have only taken four points from the last available twelve, which is even more surprising as the Reds are historically so clinical at this stage of the season. City now face an away game at Newcastle, where victory is far from inevitable and then a home game against Premier League strugglers Queens Park Rangers. The Reds face Swansea at home and finish with an away game at Sunderland, but even victory in those to games may not be enough to retain their title as City have a superior goal difference of eight goals.

United’s defensive approach to the game frustrated City early on, with the home sides best chances falling to Sergio Aguero, but both of his early efforts were off target. The Blues were looking the much stronger team toward half time and their efforts were finally rewarded when David Silva’s corner was met by Kompany who headed the ball into the goal past United keeper David de Gea.

Manchester City are undefeated at home this season having won seventeen and drawn one of their eighteen

Premier League games at the Etihad Stadium this season. The Blues now stand on the brink of their first League title for over forty years, a feat which looked impossible just a few weeks ago.
