Why has Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich been sanctioned? – BBC News



Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government as part of its response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The 55-year-old Russian oligarch is alleged to have strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he has denied.

His attempt to sell Chelsea has been halted by the UK government following the sanctions.

Chelsea FC cannot sell any more tickets for games, its merchandise shop will be closed, and it will be unable to buy or sell players on the transfer market.

The UK government said Mr Abramovich, who has an estimated net worth of £9.4bn, is «one of the few oligarchs from the 1990s to maintain prominence under Putin».

Will online abuse increase after English women's football's record deal? – BBC News



The Women’s Super League has signed a broadcast deal with the BBC and Sky earlier this year – the largest agreement in women’s football to date.

Anita Asante, who plays for Aston Villa, says the deal is a ‘huge opportunity to grow the sport’.

But she fears the increased exposure and boost to the profile of players may result in more online abuse, particularly towards non-white players.

Asante, who has experienced racist abuse from hostile crowds and on social media, says she worries whether players who haven’t been exposed to it before can ‘manage’ the potential abuse.

A report by the Professional Footballers Association has found that there has been a 48% increase in un-moderated racist online abuse in the second half of the 2020/21 football season.

Gary Lineker: 'Football is on a precipice financially' – BBC News



Former England captain and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has said that football is on a «precipice» financially and has expressed concern over the financial structure within the game.

Despite the financial struggles during the pandemic, Premier League clubs spent a total of £1.1bn in the summer transfer window, with a number of big-money moves involving the wealthiest sides.

Lineker, who played for Leicester, Everton, Barcelona and Spurs between 1979 and 1992, said that football had to «find a way» of filtering money down to lower league clubs.
