REAL MADRID PROTEST AGAINST UCL REDRAW
The scandals surrounding the Champions League playoff draw continue to pop up! According to Marca, Real Madrid have complained to UEFA about the redraw.
The management of the Royal Club claims that their team got to know Benfica as their opponent even before UEFA made mistakes in the next pairs. Madrid believes that the rescheduling of the Round of 16 games should have been held without the participation of Real and Benfica, since their pair was chosen correctly and according to all rules, meaning that UEFA had no right to interfere and change the game.
We recall Benfica facing Real Madrid in the first version of the draw, and already in the second one, they were swapped with PSG.
The Madrid chief of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueño, commented on the matter:
«It’s surprising, shameful and very difficult to understand what’s gone on today, given that millions of fans and the world of sport were following the draw».
«That said, we approach this tie with real excitement, whilst being aware of what this competition means to the club and our fans. We’re also aware of just what tough opponents we face and the quality of players they have, but we’re confident that the team will put in two great performances, ” concluded Butragueño.
